Gymnastics : Height and landing are key in the vault competition

In this event, the gymnast runs in a controlled 25-metre sprint toward the vault, using a springboard to boost himself into the air. Some gymnasts do a round-off (which is similar to a cartwheel) onto the springboard and a back handspring onto the vault itself. The gymnast then pushes off the vault with his hands and does several twists and flips in the air before landing on the other side. (more…)

beach volleyball

Matches are best-of-three sets and use the rally point system. The first two matches are played to 21 points, with the final tie-breaker set played to 15 points. A team wins a set by two points; a set will continue until one of the teams acquires a two-point lead.

Unlike indoor volleyball, a block touch counts as one of the three allowable contacts in the beach game. (more…)

Mark Cavendish about olympics

Mark Cavendish believes fatigue from competing in the Tour de France will not affect his Olympics preparations.

The 23-year-old became the first Briton since Barry Hoban in 1973 to win two stages of the Tour and hopes to complete the gruelling three-week race.

“Whether I get to Paris we will see but I’ve got no plans to stop just yet,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I’ll try for as long as possible. My Olympic event isn’t until 19 August – three and a half weeks after the Tour.”

Cavendish will team up with Bradley Wiggins in the madison in Beijing having won gold at this year’s world championships in Manchester.

The Isle of Man rider has followed up his track success by winning the fifth and eighth stages of the Tour, helping Team Columbia to a share of second in the team standings in the process.
